Why I'm taking a stand against blood cancer.
17 years ago, before I was born, my Dad was diagnosed with a type of blood cancer - lymphoma. He had lots of treatment but the doctors explained that it was the type of cancer that comes back. The only solution was for him to have a stem cell transplant (also known as a bone marrow transplant). This was a big deal. At the time, there were 13 million people on the bone marrow donor register and in 2010 only one was a good enough match. The procedure basically required all his organs to be shut down and for new stem cells to be put into his bone marrow to create new blood. His blood type even changed. It was a big challenge but on the 100th day after his transplant, my Dad walked the City to Surf and raised $20 000 for the leukaemia foundation.
Now, my Dad is once again facing a health challenge. We'll never know if this is related to the lymphoma or his treatment, but now he has a lung disease that has required him to have a lung transplant. Just last week, on Tuesday 13th October 2026, my Dad had a double lung transplant. It went really well and he's now recovering in hospital.
He won't be happy if I shave my head but I want to do my part to help, so I'm going to cut off about 30cm of my hair.
That’s why I’m taking on the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. By donating to my page, you’ll help me raise funds and awareness for blood cancer, and fuel life-changing research projects and support services for patients and their families.
Any amount – big or small – will make a real, tangible difference.
