Help me take a stand against blood cancer
On the 6th of July 2024, my beautiful best friend, Candice, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. It was completely out of the blue. I had seen her just one week earlier and she was absolutely fine. 11 absolutely gruelling months later, she died from complications of the treatment that was meant to cure her.
There was nothing that ever could have prepared any of us for how difficult that treatment journey would be on her and her family. It was isolating; her vulnerability to minor infections and the hospital time associated with that, stole her precious little time with loved ones and made it impossible for her to carry on with the life she loved and had lived so well.
There are so many thoughts, regrets, wishes and pains after losing someone so special in such a horrific way. Mostly, why? Why did it happen to her? Why didn’t she live? Why was the treatment so hard? Why, with all the science and technology available, does the treatment need to push people to the brink of death and beyond it?
When it came time to lose her hair, Candice knew it was not the main event. She always had perspective and hair was nothing in the scope of what she had ahead. If I can have half the perspective that she had, I’ll live well. So, to honour her and in the hope of finding better treatment pathways, I’m shaving my head.
I expect that my vanity for my long curls will prove a major struggle, but I hope to draw from her fierce courage and know it was worth it. I would be so grateful for your support in raising funds for such a meaningful cause. Any amount – big or small – will make a real, tangible difference.
I will be arranging a ‘shave party’ for the middle of August. Please let me know if you’re interested in watching me get me head clippered for planning purposes.
