My why
In the late 2000s, while I was still in school, my brother was diagnosed with cancer. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp the weight of it — I only knew that he was sick. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand more deeply just how heavy that period was for him, and for our family.
I remember the moments vividly: fluid being drained from his lungs, the ambulance trips to St Vincent’s, my own daily train rides into the city to visit him, and the countless hours spent in the LRH Cancer Ward for edge treatment. The steady beeping of machines, the routine changes of fluids and medication, and the coughs and groans of others fighting their own battles — all of it painted a picture of quiet resilience, of people simply doing whatever they could to make it through each day.
It was an incredibly difficult time for my brother and our family, yet what carried us through were the compassionate individuals we met along the way — every nurse, doctor, volunteer, and support worker who made the burden a little lighter.
Sadly, my story is just one of many. Far too many Australians face similar journeys, and that’s why every bit of support matters.
