Every year, hundreds of schools across the country make the World’s Greatest Shave their annual school fundraiser. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students of all ages to step out of their comfort zone and shave, cut or colour their hair to raise life-changing funds for Australians impacted by blood cancer.
To make the most out of your school fundraiser, there are a few things you can implement. We’ve spoken with one of our fundraising experts, David Hancock, for the best tips on how to make your school fundraiser not just good, but great!

Top tips for school fundraising
01 - Make it a competition
By adding some competitive flair to your school fundraiser, the whole community can get excited about the amount of funds raised.
“Whether it’s competing against school houses, individual grades or a different faculty, making it a competition always drives participation at a much higher rate.”
And with more students and staff joining the fundraiser, your school can increase the amount of donations and the positive impact on individuals and families facing a blood cancer diagnosis.
02 - Let people know your ‘why’
“Let people know that you’re doing the World’s Greatest Shave at your school through family and friends. I’d also recommend getting any parents’ businesses involved to spread the word.”
Showcasing to your community the reasons why you’re participating in a school fundraiser is a great way to get more people involved and increase donations. Read more about the World’s Greatest Shave impact here.
03 - Involve the school leaders
Student leaders or your School Representative Council (SRC) are an invaluable resource that can help get your school fundraiser off the ground. It’s also an amazing personal development opportunity for students, empowering them to step up and lead in an impactful way.
“The most successful and fun school fundraising events I’ve been to have been the ones where the student leaders took over.”
04 - Get a teacher or staff member to commit to shaving, cutting or colouring their hair
We never get tired of seeing a principal or teacher get nominated to shave, cut or colour their hair once a school fundraising team reaches a donation goal. It’s not only a fun way to kick-off the event, but it is also an amazing motivator for the students to raise as much funds as possible.
“If you reach the target, it’s a really entertaining moment at the event. When you promote it around the school and get all students involved, that’s when it makes the most impact.”
Why fundraising is important for schools
A fun and impactful fundraising opportunity is an essential element to bring a school community together. Schools often feel a strong sense of pride and community when having the ability to give back to others.
"It's amazing when you visit these schools after they've done their World's Greatest Shave. It's such an incredible experience, and they have a huge sense of pride that they've been able to assist in spreading awareness and raising valuable funds for blood cancer."
