Before My Hair Turns Grey
When I first decided to grow my hair, I had one simple thought:
Before my hair turns grey, I want to grow it long and donate it to a child who has lost their hair during cancer treatment.
At the time, cancer was something I understood only from the outside.
I knew it was difficult. I knew treatment could be a long and challenging journey. But ultimately, it was something that happened to other people and their families.
Then, during my own journey of growing my hair, my father was diagnosed with blood cancer.
Suddenly, I was no longer an outsider. I became the family member of someone going through cancer treatment.
Going through this experience with my family has helped me understand that cancer is about so much more than the illness itself. There is treatment, waiting, uncertainty, worry, and all the changes that come with it. Getting through that journey takes not only strength, but also support and resources.
Now, as I prepare to cut off the hair I have spent the past year growing, this donation means something different to me than it did when I started.
I will still donate my hair to a child who needs it, but I also hope to use this shave to raise funds for people and families going through their own cancer journey.
Having experienced what it means to need support, I hope I can also be someone who gives it.
What I can give may not be much.
A bundle of hair. A donation. One small action.
But when many small acts come together, they can become something meaningful. They can help provide resources to someone going through one of the hardest times in their life, and perhaps make that journey a little easier.
My hair will grow back. And before it turns grey, I’m glad it has the chance to help someone else first.
