I'm fundraising for the World's Greatest Shave
In January of 2022 my Uncle David was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. This form of Leukaemia targets the blood and bone marrow. For the next 2 years he battled this disease, with many periods of highs and lows for him and our family. After his diagnosis he underwent chemotherapy and was fortunate enough to enter remission, which allowed him to live a semi-normal life again for a short while. Although we knew it wouldn’t last forever, we clung to this time as a family. In the middle of 2023, the Leukaemia came back.
Healthy bone marrow should contain no more than 5% blast cells and Uncle David’s was now above 20%. He would require another round of extensive chemo to get under the 5% count and if this was successful, he would then need a bone marrow transplant. A stem cell donor can help treat Leukaemia by providing healthy blood-forming cells to replace those destroyed by chemotherapy. The donor would need to be a close match, so direct family were the most likely candidates.
In September 2023 the chemotherapy began while his two brothers, my Dad and Uncle Tony, got tested to see if they were a donor match. We were beginning to have hope when the results came back that Uncle Tony was a successful match for the stem cell transplant. Uncle David continued his treatment to get back into remission, but unfortunately after multiple attempts, he was never able to get below the 5% blast cell count.
This was one of the toughest times for our family. In late January I went with my Dad to see my Uncle in hospital for the first time in 8 months. Due to his crippled immune system from the chemotherapy, all non-essential contact had been cut off until this point. For the next few days we continued to visit and he was surrounded by his family.
Early in February this year, he passed away.
I loved my uncle. Some of my best childhood memories were spent with him and my cousins out on our Dad’s boat at Rotto, or riding our motorbikes up at Lancelin. Not a day will go by where we won’t miss him.
Some time has passed now, and after reflecting on my families experience during this tough time, I have decided to try help make a difference in the fight against cancer. In honour of my uncle, I will be fully shaving my head for the world’s greatest shave foundation. He had always been one to make jokes about my “top knot” so I’m sure he’d appreciate seeing me without any hair on my head!
Blood cancer is Australia's hidden cancer crisis. There are 140,000 families facing blood cancer right now and it takes the lives of 16 Australians every day.
