Help me take a stand against blood cancer
Right now, over 150,000 Australians are facing the devastating impact of blood cancer, and 17 lose their life every single day.
My Dad was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer about a year ago called Thrombocythemia. It is caused by a mutation in a gene called JAK-2. His bone marrow produces too many platelets, and also too many red blood cells, which leads to many different symptoms, including pain and fatigue, and increases his risk of having a heart attack or stroke which is very scary. Some of the treatments also have some nasty side effects, but he has good doctors looking after him!
My Nanna has a different type of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. It has caused her many problems, and she is often in severe pain. Also, a lot of the treatments she has tried have had some really awful side effects for her.
I am so proud of how my Dad and my Nanna are coping with everything they are going through. I admire them both greatly.
