How to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave: A step-by-step guide

20 February 2026

Thinking of participating in the World’s Greatest Shave, but don’t know how to start? This step-by-step guide reveals everything you need to know before, during, and after your big day.

Before Your Fundraising Event

1. Choose to shave, cut, or colour your hair

There are so many ways to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave. Shaving your hair is the most popular choice and is the ultimate act of support for people facing blood cancer. You can also cut your hair into a bob, pixie cut, mullet, or something else and even donate your hair to increase your impact. If a splash of colour is more your vibe, colouring your hair is a great option – go blonde, bright red, or even rainbow! However you choose to take part, you’ll become a walking, talking billboard for blood cancer care.

2. Set up your event date

Up next is to set up your event date. It’s important to know that you can participate in the World’s Greatest Shave all year round. However, our peak time to shave, cut, or colour is every March. If you don’t have a date for your event locked in when you sign up, that’s a-okay. You can log back into your account and set a date when you’re ready.

3. Make the first donation

A great way to kickstart your fundraising is to make the first donation to your fundraising page! You’ll lead by example and give your friends, family and wider circle an amount to match when they are donating.

4. Share your fundraising page and your “why”

The next step is to share your fundraising page and tell others your “why”. The easiest and most effective way to do this is through social media or email, where you can link to your fundraising page directly. Learn how to share your fundraising page link on social media here.

Be sure to explain the reasons behind why you are fundraising – such as supporting or honouring a loved one, raising awareness for blood cancer, or simply doing a good thing!

5. Check out our fundraising guides and ask for help

During Your Shave, Cut, or Colour

6. Auction off the honours

A fun way to kick off your shave, cut, or colour is to auction off the honours. The person who donates the most will be the person who shaves your hair, cuts off your first ponytail, or sprays the first colour into your hair. It’s a great way to increase your fundraising amount and make your event more fun, entertaining, and engaging.

7. Share your event on social media

Be sure to take plenty of images and videos to post on your social media during and after your event. This can be a reminder of your “why”, or a simple before and after of your hair transformation. Many fundraisers also get creative and post transition videos and montages accompanied by their favourite song.

8. Enjoy the moment

While the World’s Greatest Shave is about helping Australians with blood cancer, it’s also about you. Don’t forget to have fun and enjoy! When your big day arrives, ensure to surround yourself with those who matter and who will celebrate your hairy sacrifice.

After Your Hair Transformation

9. Donate your hair

If you’re shaving or cutting, you can take your impact further by donating your hair to our partners at Sustainable Salons. You can donate both long ponytails or even short clippings. Hair donations are used to create wigs for people who lose their hair during treatment, as well as hair booms that help clean up our oceans. Learn more about why and how to donate hair here.

10. Re-share your fundraising page

When all is said and done, your last task is to re-share your fundraising page via social media or email in one final effort for last-minute donations. This will encourage your wider community to donate, now that you have completed your shave, cut, or colour. It’s also another opportunity to share images or videos of your amazing hair transformation.
