When blood cancer changes the lives of 11,500 Australians each year, the Leukaemia Foundation is ready.
By raising funds through the World’s Greatest Shave, we are able to continue to fund blood cancer research, and provide free services to support Australian families.
How the money helps
Once a man with a self-dubbed “take no prisoners” approach, Adelaide’s Tony Zelipski has a changed outlook on life after a diagnosis of Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma in February 2009 turned life upside down for his family.
Tony underwent intensive chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant in May 2009.
When Tony was intermittently able to be at home again, the Leukaemia Foundation helped to transport him to and from his hospital treatments.
“I wouldn’t have been able to get him there otherwise – I had the girls to look after,” Tony’s wife, Vicki, said. The Leukaemia Foundation car was just a godsend.”
The Foundation also surprised the couple’s daughters, Rozalia and Georgia, with tickets to the circus and the Royal Show.
Now in full remission, Tony says he feels “very humbled to have beaten the odds so far”.
“I try to live each day as best as I can, fulfilling mine and my family’s wishes,” he said.
